It was nearly seven in the evening when Harrison shut down his computer and slid the folded papers into the front of his pants. He grabbed his briefcase and coat and said goodnight to the few people he passed in the hallway. Stepping off the elevator, he turned left and walked toward security.

“Good evening, sir,” the officer greeted as Harrison handed him his briefcase. The officer flipped it open and inspected it. The contents were not very interesting, gym clothes and shoes, and a now empty insulated lunch box. “Thank you, sir. Step inside please.”

Harrison hesitated slightly before stepping inside the body scanner, “I’m sorry, this has just been a little more embarrassing lately.”

“Quite all right, sir,” the security officer assured him warmly.

The machine scanned and Harrison stepped out and waited. The officer watching the monitor called over the supervisor who had previously inspected Harrison’s briefcase. They were pointing at the screen and whispering, “This will only take a moment, sir.”

Harrison knew they were pulling up this morning’s image to see if they matched. They would…he hoped. It felt like he had been standing there for an eternity as he watched the men fumble with the computer. Beads of sweat were trickling down his spine, but were interrupted and absorbed when they reached the edge of the incontinence underwear Harrison was wearing for the second time today. Only this time he was hoping the thick pad in front was concealing the documents. “Thank you sir. Have a nice evening. Be well.”

“I will, thank you.”

Walking briskly to his car, Harrison caught himself unconsciously holding his briefcase with both hands in front of himself. “C’mon, you know better than that. That’s just the sort of tell that would tip someone off,” he muttered to himself dropping the briefcase to his right side and swinging it lightly.

Once inside the car, Harrison drove out of the complex and toward downtown DC. He parked in a garage on Massachusetts Ave. near Dupont Circle and got out, leaving his briefcase in the car. He walked the circle, before getting off at New Hampshire Ave. NW. He cut across to L St., then over to 19th St. NW, before walking up to M St., and across to Connecticut Ave. Harrison was now certain no one was following him so he walked down Connecticut Ave. and into the lobby of the Mayflower Hotel.

He approached the desk clerk, “Good evening, my wife should have left a key here for me. The name is Ackerman.”

“Yes sir, I have it right here. Room 616. Please enjoy your stay. The elevators are to your right.”

Harrison rode the elevator up and let himself in to find Missy Ackerman standing nervously wide-eyed at the door, her hair in disarray from passing her fingers through it too many times.

Neither of them spoke until they were locked inside the room, “That was kind of risky, Harrison. Why not just come downstairs to the Salt Mine?”

“There’s no way for me to justify still being at the office.
